Peter is a recognized thought leader in data privacy and digital media with over 20 years of experience as a marketer, technologist, lobbyist and association leader and as a current educator, consultant and speaker.

Peter served the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) as its first Assistant Director and then as Vice President. He helped to establish IAPP-Canada in Ottawa and the Canada Privacy Symposium, an annual event in Toronto since 2006.

Peter led the creation of the first professional certification in privacy, the IAPP’s Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) in 2004. He then launched the CIPP-Canada (CIPP/C) in 2006 and four more credentials. Today, over 40,000 professionals globally hold one or more CIPPs which certify knowledge in global privacy laws, standards, and practices.

Peter then served the US-based Digital Advertising Alliance and the DAA “AdChoices” program as the organization’s first managing director.

Peter’s roots are in digital media beginning with one of the first Web publishing sites, Hotwired and WIRED magazine. He has served in leadership roles at technology companies CMGI and dataxu (now ROKU), trade associations, the 4As and the NAI, and at ad agencies Wells Rich Greene BDDP and MVBMS Partners/EURO RSCG.

Since 2020, Peter has been the program advisor, content developer and course instructor for the first post-graduate program in information privacy offered by York University in Toronto. He also advises private clients on digital media and data privacy issues.
